my home network was very simple up until december. i was just running a tplink wifi six wireless router. it worked fine for what i needed it to do. vpn server, file server from usb stick, and guest and iot networks. i did eventually want to upgrade to a managed network, so that i can segment my network with vlans and access control lists.
i stayed with tplink and upgraded to their omada lineup of switches, routers, and wifi access points. i decided to get all gigabit networking hardware as it was pretty much the standard. the setup was fairly easy, except i had to manually configure the router since i also still wanted the network up. obviously, that was not the case and eventually i had to take down the network. so i plugged the router to my pc and configured it with the right ip address. the switch and ap would then be recognized by the controller.
i self hosted the omada controller inside of docker and it worked well in detecting. i ran updates on the hardware, setup the vlans, and everything worked as intended. there was a little bit of downtime, but i was just glad that i got everything working. i will need to move the location of the ap since it is in basement where all the cable runs go.
that will be for a future project.
